5th & 7th Grade Collaboration

On Monday, November 11, 2013, students in Sra. Sachar's 7-1 class took the role of teachers during Spanish class.  They lead an activity where they practiced "preguntas y respuestas" with Sra. Menefee and Sra. Bofill-Polsky's 5th grade classes.  The activity resembled a "jeopardy" game.  Seventh grade students were scattered in stations, clock wise, around the Assembly Hall.  They each had a question.  Fifth graders, in groups of 2 or 3, had a sheet with answer sentence structures.  Their task was to match their answer to the question and have a short conversation.  If successful, they would receive a sticker.  After visiting each station, the activity was wrapped-up with a an entire group question and answer session.  Enjoy some pictures of the activity!

5th Grade & 6-B Collaboration

Sra. Duncan's Sixth Age classes in the Lower School have been working on colors and their own Joan Miró-inspired art work. Sra. Sachar's 5th grade class was reviewing colors, so the students practiced their color vocabulary by participating in a collaborative lesson with Sra. Duncan's 6-B Spanish class. On Thursday, November 7th, the students enjoyed playing Memory with color cards. They also completed a color by number version of Miró's People and Dog in the Sun.

¡Feliz día de los muertos!

Middle schoolers are learning about and celebrating Día de los Muertos in many ways. 5th graders decorated their own sugar skulls, 6th graders created dancing skeletons, and 7th and 8th graders read and discussed a Spanish children's story about a young girl celebrating the memory of her grandmother.

Check out this award winning video about Día de los Muertos and enjoy some photos from our own celebrations.

7th Grade Students teach Spanish to the 10th Agers

Sra. Sachar's seventh grade students created lessons using the pet/animal/family & question words vocabulary that Sra. Duncan's Lower School 10th Age students were learning. They started their lessons by reviewing vocabulary and basic questions about themselves. Then, they taught the 10th Age chicos how to find out more information about the number of pets/family someone has; and how to use questions words to create new questions. It was a great learning experience for all. Please enjoy the slideshow below.

5th Graders Teach 6th Agers

Collaborative Lessons Between Fifth Grade & Sixth Age Are Fun for All!

Yesterday, Sra. Menefee's fifth grade Spanish class traveled to the lower school to work with Sra. Duncan's 6-C Spanish class. (Coincidentally, the fifth grade students were Sra. Duncan's first Sixth Age class at Calvert! She taught them the color song, Los colores by Susy Dorn, five years ago and they STILL love to sing it.)  We started off the class greeting each other. 6-C sang their greeting songs and some of the fifth graders sang along. Then, they all sang Los colores together (see the video below). Next, the fifth grade buddies played games to reinforce the color words that the students in 6-C have been learning. After a playing for a bit, the students in 6-C told the fifth grade students about the key features of Spanish artist Joan Miró's work. Together, they completed a color by numbers version of Miró's People and Dog in the Sun. What a fun class! Enjoy the video and slide shows below.

Saludos y Despedidas

7th graders hit the ground running!  We started the year reviewing basic vocabulary.  The first topic was greetings & farewells.  Students reviewed vocabulary by writing a dialogue with a partner, creating a comic strip, memorizing and presenting.  Enjoy a few samples.
